The Withdrawal Agreement negotiated between the EU and the UK provides for a transition period until 31 December 2020 during which the regulations on the coordination of social security systems will continue to apply (e.g. for tourists, pensioners, students, posted workers).
The transition period of the Withdrawal Agreement endeds on 31 December 2020.
Regulations on the coordination of social security systems continue to apply to the ex-tent set out in the Withdrawal Agreement to cases with a cross-border connection to the UK before 1 January 2021.
Regulations on the coordination of social security systems will continue to apply under the conditions set out in the Trade and Cooperation Agreement between the EU and the UK to cases that begin on or after 1 January 2021 without any previous cross-border connection between an EU member state and the UK whatsoever. The new agreement contains regulations relating to the coordination of social security systems that essentially correspond to the previous provisions. However, benefits in the event of the need for long-term care are not covered. The new agreement applies from 1 January 2021 to cases beginning on or after 1 January 2021 which previously had no cross-border connection between an EU member state and the UK.
